Freebies, Writing Update, and Why I've Pulled My Books Out of Kindle Unlimited
And I've added some new categories to my page!
Whew! I’ve had a roller coaster the last few weeks. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to manage my at home work schedule. I’m easily distracted by shinys and I know I’m not the only one. LOL
That being said, this newsletter hasn’t gone out for a couple of weeks, the main reason being my husband had a minor stroke in the middle of one of those weeks. He’s fine, so no need to be concerned. Fortunately for us, it only affected the vision in his right eye a little bit, and did no further damage. The vision is easily corrected with glasses which we’ll be getting soon for him. Still, it was a symptom that I hadn’t heard of before and that was with working in the healthcare field for decades. So, if you or someone you love has a sudden change in their vision like this, don’t discount it! My husband and I did and waited until the next day when he had a doctor’s appointment to do anything. Turns out this can be very serious. We lucked out, his brain scan was clean and he just ended up with a little vision loss. But it could have been much worse, so if you or a loved one experience it, call an ambulance it’s what we should have done.
Kindle Unlimited News And Why I Pulled My Books Out
All of my books have now been pulled out of Kindle Unlimited. I decided after several months of lower royalty payments that it wasn’t doing me or my books any good to be in the Kindle Unlimited program or to be exclusive to Amazon. I think Kindle Unlimited works really well for authors who have the ability to churn out books on a monthly or quarterly basis. But for me that hasn’t been possible due to my day job and life. Also, I like to let a book percolate. I’d rather write slower and provide a good quality reading experience for my readers than write fast just to have a book out once a month or once a quarter, and make a few extra bucks.
For the last few years I’ve noticed a trend in the writing industry and that is to write a book a month. Usually, this is for non-fiction, but there are fiction writers touting this as well. They have all these tips and tricks to write and publish books faster. I’m not sure this is the best way publish, and may lead to lower quality books. I’m not saying that some writers who write fast don’t write good books, I definitely know of several who can write fast and write quality. However, for me and my writing process, I haven’t been able to find a way to make it work for me.
But I digress, the point is if you can write quickly and write quality books at the same time you can definitely do well being exclusive to Amazon, and being in their Kindle Unlimited Program. But if you’re someone like me who doesn’t put out a book once a month or quarter, it’s not as lucrative.
So, I’ve decided to go wide with my catalog, and that will include selling my books on my website. My plan is to price my books on my website a bit lower than on the third party distributors to make it more advantageous to visit my website and buy there, rather than clicking away to a third party distributor. So stay tuned for that!
Right now I only have my books for sale on Amazon, but in the next few months I’ll be going wide, and putting all my books into paperback as well. I also may be changing up some covers. But we’ll see. I’ll keep you posted.
Freebies
If you’ve looked at my main page lately, you’ll notice that I’ve added some new categories to my page. One of those categories is “exclusive content.” I’ll be posting fiction shorts and links to fiction you can download for free there. I recently took down a short story I had published on Amazon called Alien Dreams so I could make it free for readers. I’ll be posting a link for you to download there today! :-)
